Hi!

Any truth behind organic coffee having much less caffiene and none of the other chemicals/pesticides in it...and how about organic decaf.

I often hear that regular decaf is not very good for us, its better to have a regular cup of joe.

What a really great question- Does organic coffee contain less caffeine? the answer is no. Organic coffee means the beans were raised without harmful pesticides and herbicides grown on soil without residual fertilizers or chemicals so yes, they shouldn't contain harmful pesticides or chemicals.

In order to say "Organic" on the label in the US, growing standards must be met and certified by a branch of the USDA. The use of the green round Organic label can only be used by those producers who have been certified. Coffee beans are tested on coming into the country for residue pesticides and other chemicals to ensure growing standards.

You raise another important question regarding the decaffeinating process. The process has changed over the years due to the toxins left over from the old ways they used to decaffeinate the bean.

The old way uses a methylene chloride used as a solvent to extract caffeine from many raw materials (not just coffee). Molecules of caffeine bind to molecules of methylene chloride. The materials are softened in a water bath or in steam. The next step is to process the materials with methylene chloride by either of two methods:
Using the "direct" method, caffeine is removed by directly soaking the materials in methylene chloride.
Using the "indirect" method, caffeine, which is water soluble, is extracted by soaking the materials in water. Many of the flavors and oils are also extracted during this process, so the solution is treated with methylene chloride and then returned to the material for re-absorption of the flavorings.

Coffees are now decaffeinated in their green state. Three principal processes are used today: the traditional or European process, the water-only or Swiss-Water Process, and the CO2/water or Sparkling Water Process. All are consistently successful in removing all but a trace (2% to 3%) of the resident caffeine. So decaf coffee is safe to drink.
