They have always had flare ups...especially during PMS. My period is due tomorrow and my gums feel like they've been ravenged the past week or two. It concerns me for my dental health. I cant seem to pinpoint it to any food I'm eating...thoughts?

Solstice,

I think a dentist appointment would be in line, but the first nutrient that comes to mind when gums are either bleeding or sore is vitamin C.

How's  your consumption of citrus? Fresh spinach, blueberries, strawberries, melons are all good sources of vitamin C.

If your gums are bleeding then it could be low vitamin K, which is very common in people with Celiac or gluten sensitivity.

Want to know more about the possible cause of bleeding gums see this link to Med-line

I was just there two weeks ago and my hygenist gave me some special toothpicks and mouthwash. I have been taking a vitamin C supplement. I eat plenty of green veggies...not as much fruit...usually an apple or some blueberries every day though.

not that I've really noticed? What would constitute bruising easily and what does that mean?

If you have lots of dark marks on your body that you can't remember being injured or if you notice brusies from just easily being hit by something.

Easy bruising is a sign of vitamin K deficiency, which would also go hand in hand with your gum problems. Vitamin K helps in blood coagulation, healing and collagen production.

Want more detail about vitamin K see this Linus Pauling Institute website at Oregon State University

Here's a simpler explanation of what vitamin K does at Med-line

Very interesting, I used to have bruises all over my arms and legs--- now that I think about it I haven't had a black and blue mark on my arms for a while now.

I finally picked up some vitamin K today at the health store. I'm going to supplement a bit this month and see what results. Wonder if that has to do with my heavy bleeding at the beginning of my periods...sometimes a super tampon per hour!

Solstice....heavy period bleeding is more likely estrogen dominance, but could very well be connected to a vitamin K deficiency.
